Germantown, one of Philadelphia’s most historic neighborhoods, is experiencing increased development pressure as new residential projects continue to enter the market. While investment can bring revitalization and economic growth, many residents are raising concerns about affordability, displacement, and the long-term impact on the community’s identity.
As home prices and rents rise, long-time residents worry that Germantown may become financially out of reach for the very people who helped shape the neighborhood. Local resident Andrew Kirkpatrick recently shared that if he and his family were trying to buy a home in Germantown today, it might no longer be affordable for them.
These concerns are not isolated. Community members recently gathered at a workshop organized by Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together (GREAT), a local group focused on promoting housing stability and economic equity. The event aimed to educate residents about their housing options and empower them to advocate for policies that preserve Germantown as a mixed-income neighborhood.
